The majority of motor vehicle crashes that resulted in fatalities occurred most often at roughly 12:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. On weekdays, the highest number of fatal crashes occurred at 12:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and between 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. On weekends, the most common timeframe for a fatal motor vehicle accident was 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The highest number of weekday motor vehicle crashes occurred on Fridays with a total of 16,826 crashes and 149 fatalities, or 23.76% of all weekday crashes and 25.8% of all weekday fatalities. Wednesday fatalities were a close second, with 15,210 crashes resulting in 147 fatalities or 21.48% of all weekday crashes and 25.48% of all weekday fatalities.
Not surprisingly, weekend crashes accounted for 28.31% of all motor vehicle accidents and 40.52% of all fatal accidents, or 27,960 total crashes and 393 fatalities occurring on weekends. Saturdays were certainly more dangerous than Sundays, with 12,999 Saturday crashes resulting in 171 fatalities compared to 9,974 Sunday crashes resulting in 140 fatalities. That’s 56.59% of weekend crashes and 55% of weekend fatalities occurring on Saturday.
These statistics remain consistent whether in urban or rural areas, with the most weekday accidents occurring on Fridays than on any other day of the week and more fatal accidents occurring on Saturdays than on any other day of the week.
In urban areas, the least likely day of the week to be involved in a vehicle crash was Sunday, and the least likely day of the week to be involved in a fatal crash was Monday. On the other hand, in rural areas, the least likely day of the week to be involved in a vehicle crash was Monday, and the least likely day of the week to be involved in a fatal crash was Tuesday.
What Month of the Year do Most Motor Vehicle Accidents Occur in Arizona?
In 2020, motor vehicle accidents occurred most often in January than in any other month, with fatal accidents occurring most often in February and September. The most crashes in the state occurred on February 14, with a total of 502 crashes in one day. The most fatal crashes in Arizona occurred on February 21, September 19, October 28, November 3, and December 13.
